Summary
This chapter covered a lot of ground in terms of how to break down the challenge of not only discovering what career within the media and journalism industry is right for you and in what environment, capacity, and work culture you want to work but also how best to prepare yourself for achieving your career goal.
In this chapter, you learned about the broad range of roles that fall under the career umbrella of the media and journalism industry. And although the various careers that existâfrom editor in chief to photojournalistâthe chapter also pointed to many tools and methods that can help you navigate the confusing path to choosing a career that is right for you. It also addressed some of the specific training and educational options and requirements and expectations that will put you, no matter what your current education level or age, at a strong advantage in a competitive field.
Use this chapter as a guideline for how to best discover what type of career will be the right fit for you and consider what steps you can already be taking to get there. Some tips to leave you with:
Take time to carefully consider what kind of work environment you see yourself working in and what kind of schedule, interaction with colleagues, work culture, and responsibilities you want to have.
Follow the newsânot just the stories, but trends in writing styles, interview formats, production techniques (for television and radio), new and innovative news sites, publications, and broadcasts. Be aware of how technology is used and what new technologies exist.
Equally, keep up with the actual news. If you want to follow a certain subject matter, be it show ponies or astrophysics, read, listen to, and watch as much as you can about your area of interest.
Start immediately keeping a portfolio of you work. If you donât have any professional work to highlight, you can still show off your skills to potential employers or schools. Write, record podcasts, make videos, take photographsâwhatever format you choose.
Shadow a professional to get a feeling for the hours kept, challenges faced, and the overall job. Find out what education or training he or she completed.
Investigate various colleges and certification options so you can better prepare yourself for the next step in your career path. (More on this in chapter 3.)
Donât feel you have to wait until you graduate from high school to begin taking steps to accomplish your career goals. You can already begin by working on your portfolio so you can showcase your artwork, for example.
Keep work-life balance in mind. The career you choose will be one of many adult decisions you make, and ensuring that you keep all of your prioritiesâfamily, location, work scheduleâin mind will help you choose the right career for you, which will make you a happier person.
